Summer means construction and building in the Midwest, and several of our camp properties are no exception. Both Camp Birch Trails and Camp Pow-Low will get new shower houses, and the Pow-Low troop house will also be remodeled. Construction will begin this summer as weather permits. The troop house at Pow-Low will be unavailable until October 15, 2014. Programming at Camp at Birch Trails will not be affected. Arrangements have been made with impacted volunteers and troops to try to accommodate them. This past winter, the property ad hoc committee and staff have been working with architects to finalize plans for these necessary upgrades and to secure a contractor for the projects. Construction costs were much higher than anticipated—they exceeded the proceeds raised from the sale of properties—however, the board approved additional property development dollars to enable the projects to proceed as planned. Camps Winnecomac, Cuesta, Nawakwa, Sacajawea, and Del O’Claire are not scheduled for significant property improvements at this time. Programming at these facilities has shifted to better address membership usage and Council resources. The ad hoc property committee will continue to work toward implementing elements of the property master plan if resources become available to fund future projects.
