About Girl Scouts

Our Mission
Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

About Girl Scouts of the USA
Founded in 1912 by Juliette Gordon Low, Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) is the preeminent leadership development organization for girls with 3.6 million girl and adult members worldwide. Girl Scouting is the leading authority on girls’ healthy development, and builds girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place. The organization serves girls from every corner of the United States and its territories. GSUSA also serves American girls and their classmates attending American or international schools overseas in 90 countries. To learn more about GSUSA and the history of Girl Scouting, visit www.girlscouts.org.

Values
Our mission, along with the Girl Scout Promise and Law are the foundation of all we do. By saying the Promise, girls are pledging to live by the elements of the Law, and those elements are incorporated into all program activities to bring them to life.

WHAT IS GIRL SCOUTING?

About the Girl Scout Program
The Girl Scout program is based on the needs and interests of girls. All members:

  • Share the Girl Scout Promise and Law
  • Pay national dues of $10 ($12 for 09-10)
  • Follow safety guidelines

Membership
Membership is open to any girl in grades K-12 who has made the Girl Scout Promise, accepts the Girl Scout Law, and pays annual membership dues*. Adults who accept the organization’s principles and beliefs and pay annual* or lifetime membership dues are also welcome to join.

*Financial assistance is available from GSNWGL for all or part of the annual national membership dues. Please contact us for more information.

The Girl Scout Promise

On my honor, I will try:
To serve God* and my country,
To help people at all times,
And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

* The word "God" can be interpreted in a number of ways, depending on one's spiritual beliefs. When reciting the Girl Scout Promise, it is okay to replace the word "God" with whatever word your spiritual beliefs dictate.

The Girl Scout Law

I will do my best to be
honest and fair,
friendly and helpful,
considerate and caring,
courageous and strong, and
responsible for what I say and do,
and to
respect myself and others,
respect authority,
use resources wisely,
make the world a better place, and
be a sister to every Girl Scout.
