what do girl scouts do

Troops and individual Girl Scouts will love the Council-Wide and Council-Sponsored Programs! These programs have limited space and they fill up fast, so register EARLY!  Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Click here for Council-Wide Programs; here for Council-Sponsored Programs.

Council-Wide Programs

Six Council-Wide Programs will be offered during the troop year. Each of the programs will focus on a topic that research shows that girls are interested in or want to learn more about. Most Council-Wide Programs are available to all girls, and sessions during the event are divided by grade level to ensure that each girl is participating in a program that will benefit her. Locations for some Council-Wide Programs to be announced.

GSI: Girl Scouts Investigate
Date/Time: Saturday, March 6 (March 13 for Wausau location), 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. for Daisies and Brownies; 1:00-4:00 p.m. for Juniors and up
Locations: Chippewa Valley Technical College – West Campus; Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, Green Bay, WI; Fox Valley Technical College, Appleton, WI; Emerald Elementary, Manistique, MI; Boys & Girls Club, Plover, WI; Northcentral Technical College, Wausau, WI; Woodland Elementary School, Kingsford, MI canceled at this location
Description: Can you solve the mystery? Spend an exciting day sleuthing with other Girl Scouts as you apply real crime scene investigation techniques to solve a mysterious case. Collect and examine evidence from the crime scene and experience firsthand forensic analysis techniques.

Crazy Olympics
Date/Time: Saturday, April 10, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. (12:00-3:00 pm for Eau Claire location, 1:00-4:00 pm for Irma location)
Locations: Eau Claire Gymnastics Center, Eau Claire WI; Michigan Tech University, Houghton, MI; Camp Winnecomac, Kaukauna, WI; Camp Birch Trails, Irma, WI; Tri-County Gymnastics, Green Bay, WI; Camp Sacajawea, Wisconsin Rapids, WI
Description: What does it take to be an Olympic athlete? Answer that question and see if you’re up for the challenge in the crazy day full of fun and games. Compete in Olympic style events, learn the history of the Olympics, and participate in games - Olympic style!

Girl University

Location: University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point
Description: Girl University is a two-day leadership conference for Girl Scout Cadettes, Girl Scout Seniors, Girl Scout Ambassadors and Girl Scout adults. This event is a great opportunity for girls to develop essential leadership skills, and to develop personally and professionally. This dynamic event will include hands-on seminars and activities that will both challenge minds to solve problems and tap into and explore leadership potential. Bussing will be provided from Service Centers throughout the Council to the location the event is held.
Grades: 7 to Adult
Cost: $70/girl, $35/adult

Council-Sponsored Programs

Council-Sponsored Programs will be held periodically throughout the year at varying locations. These programs will address topics such as health and wellness, camp and outdoors, leadership and adventure, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and arts and culture. All programs are open to all girls in the Council, regardless of which Service Center you're nearest to, so check other locations for programs that may interest you.

Appleton Area

Girl Scout Night at Little House on the Prairie
Date/Time: Friday, March 26, 6:30 p.m.
Location: Fox Cities Performing Arts Center, Appleton, WI
Description: Families will love these life affirming stories about the Ingalls’ struggles and triumphs through the celebration of the pioneering spirit and the core values on which this country was founded. Join us before the show for arts, crafts and games! Come as you are, wear your uniform or wear your bonnet for prairie-inspired fun! Activities begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Kimberly-Clark Theater; show starts promptly at 7:30 p.m. This special event is open only to girls who spring register for the 2010-2011 troop year. For more information on Spring Registration contact your Membership Manager. Be sure to bring your completed 2010-2011 girl registration form with $12 payment the night of the show, checks can be made out to GSNWGL.

Cost: $22 or $42/participant (depending on seat location)

Earth Day Bash
Date/Time: Saturday, April 24, 2010, 1:00-4:00 p.m.
Location: Appleton Service Center, Appleton, WI
Description: Celebrate the Earth’s resources and become an Earth Day activist as you complete fun activities and various projects that help the Earth! Go green as you celebrate the world and make a difference! Bring the family and explore the environment, contribute to your community and perfect an Earth Day art project.

Program Aide (PA) Training
Date/Time: Saturday-Sunday, May 1-2, 2010; Saturday 10:00 a.m.-Sunday 12:00 p.m.
Location: Camp Winnecomac, Kaukauna, WI
Description: Program Aide (PA) training is open to teen Girl Scouts who are currently in the 6th grade or older. Girls may not serve as a PA until they have completed the 6th grade. The PA training will allow girls to develop basic leadership skills and connections with others interested in leadership. The training gives girls a basis for working with younger Girl Scouts. It covers the fundamental components of the Girl Scout program including: program activities and processes, girl/adult partnership, Safety-Wise, pluralism and gender equity. Girls become comfortable with resources and explore age-appropriate teaching methods. You will leave this overnight training with skills in fire building, outdoor cooking, knot tying and the ability to teach songs and games. All girls who would like to volunteer at any of our eight summer camps must have taken this training. Girls completing this training will receive a PA pin. Learn more about PA Training here.

Program Aide (PA) Training

Description: Can’t wait for camp to start? Maybe you’re a first time camper and you want to check out Nawakwa. Either way, you won’t want to miss Camper Sampler! This special event is open to girls of all ages, and we want you to bring your family! We’ll have the waterfront open, all buildings open, guided hiking tours of camp, campfires, arts and crafts, and of course, S’mores! We’ll also have experts on hand to answer your camp questions so you’ll feel ready for summer sessions. C’mon everyone - let’s go camping!

Green Bay Area

Power Up

Description: Life’s about being crafty. Whether you’re using your imagination on an art project or your craftiness to make smart decisions, especially when buying a car or taking care of it. Have the experts from Gandrud Auto Group share the ins and outs of buying a car, safe driving, and car maintenance. After your head is full of great facts, take time to relax by being pampered with a massage and creating a genius work of art.
Grades: 6-12

Diva Designs
Date/Time: Saturday, May 1, 2010, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
Location: Neville Public Museum, Green Bay WI
Description: Traditions and ceremonies are an important part of everyone’s lives. Explore the “Here Comes the Bride” exhibit to get a firsthand look on how fashions and traditions have changed throughout the years. Have the opportunity to get a deeper understanding of different cultures and how each tradition is special. Use your artistic side to design your own dress using inspiration from around the world.

Program Aide (PA) Training

Culture, Crafts & Cuisine

Location: Bonifas Art Center, Escanaba, MI
Description: Experience art, food and entertainment from around the globe. Sample ethnic cuisine, try your hand at creating some authentic crafts and learn games kids play in other parts of the world.

Schofield Area

Gearing Up!
Date/Time: Saturday, April 17, 2010, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. for Brownies; 1:00-4:00 p.m. for Juniors

Description: Put your engineering skills to the test! Get your creative and scientific juices flowing by constructing and testing two interactive and fun designs. Strengthen team-building and mechanical skills through this exciting engineering experience.

Description: Spend the day kicking, hitting, running and more as we play, play, play! Try karate, kickball, volleyball and more. Make a healthy snack and discuss why it’s so good for you to exercise.

Taste of Camp
Date/Time: Saturday, May 22, 2010, 1:00-4:00 p.m.
Location: Camp Sacajawea, Wisconsin Rapids, WI
Description: It’s time to find out what camp is all about! If you’ve never been to camp before or if you just can’t wait until summer to be at camp, this program is for you. Take part in all of your favorite camp activities: canoeing/kayaking, arts & crafts, nature hike, making s’mores at the campfire and so much more! Tour the camp and meet some of the staff!
Grades: K-6
Cost: $8/girl
