girl scout uniforms
By wearing the Girl Scout uniform, Girl Scouts show their pride in belonging to the preeminent leadership development organization for girls.
Girl Scouts wear uniforms at meetings or Girl Scout events to:
- Make them easily identifiable to each other and to the public
- Foster a feeling of unity among members
- Reinforce the sense of belonging to the Girl Scout Movement
A Girl Scout is proud to wear her uniform because it symbolizes the high ideals for which Girl Scouting stands.
National Girl Scout Uniform Policy
The National Board of Directors approved a new uniform policy in 2006, to become effective in fall 2008. Based on this policy, girls at each level are required to wear an official item (e.g., sash, vest, or tunic) for the display of official pins and awards and when girls participate in ceremonies or officially represent the Girl Scout organization. Girl Scout Juniors, Seniors and Ambassadors will wear their official item (sash or vest) with white shirts and khaki pants or skirts. Girl Scout Daisies and Brownies continue to have a full collection of uniform components available or may wear their khaki pants or skirts and white shirts with the vest or sash. Girl Scouts Daisies can also choose a tunic. There is also a collection of casual wear for girls to enjoy. The official uniform for adults is navy blue business attire worn with a scarf and membership pins for women and a tie for men.
Uniforms by Grade Level
Each grade level has its own uniform options. In addition to showing Girl Scout pride, Girl Scout uniforms offer girls a space to proudly display the awards, badges, and other insignia that they work so hard to earn.
- Girl Scout Daisies (Grades K-1) can choose a tunic or vest to wear over their clothes to place their Membership Pin, Learning Petals, Journey Awards and participation patches on. They may also wear official T-shirts, shorts, or sweatpants and jackets.
- Girl Scout Brownies (Grades 2-3) can wear a uniform with either a sash or vest to display their Try-Its and other insignia. Other options include a hooded sweatshirt, drawstring pants, cargo pants, blouses, turtlenecks, and T-shirts.
- Girl Scout Juniors (Grades 4-5) can wear uniforms with either a sash or vest to display their badges, Journey Awards and other insignia. Other options include hooded sweatshirts, white short-sleeve polo shirts, khaki cargo pocket pants and T-shirts.
- Girl Scout Cadettes (Grades 6-8), Girl Scout Seniors (Grades 9-10), and Girl Scout Ambassadors (Grades 11-12) wear a uniform with either a sash or vest to display their Interest Project and Journey Awards, and other insignia. Additional options include polos, graphic T-shirts, hoodies, sweatpants and more.
- Girl Scout Adults can choose from navy blue business attire worn with a scarf and membership pins for women and a tie for men. 'Business attire' can include formal two-piece business suits to sweater sets and slacks. Other official options include polos and a zip-front jacket.
Changing with the Times
From the first uniform in 1912, consisting of dark blue blouses and skirts with light blue sateen ties, black felt campaign hats, and black shoes and stockings, to today's uniform options of khaki cargo pants and casual sweatshirts and T-shirts, the Girl Scout uniform has evolved with the times.
Understanding the needs and activities of girls, Girl Scouts of the USA has continually offered new styles, based in part on supply—the fabrics and findings that are readily available; on demand—the request from the girls and adults who wear the uniform; and on fashion—as fashion changes constantly, so does the Girl Scout uniform.
