Recognized by every U.S. president since 1976, Black History Month celebrates achievements by black Americans as well as their centrality in the history of America. Earlier than 1976, though, there was a celebration week that developed into a month-long recognition on several college campuses. Every year, a central theme is chosen for Black History Month to emphasize—2024’s theme is “African Americans and the Arts”.
There are many ways in which you and your Girl Scout can celebrate and honor this month—
Black History Month is only one month, but this is a reminder that we should celebrate diverse perspectives all year round. Encourage your Girl Scout (and yourself) to keep learning and doing the work to champion a better future for others. Girl Scouts can participate in all of the Multicultural Community Celebration patch programs throughout the year to start this work.
