Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes (GSNWGL) welcomes Dr. Kelly Steelman as their new board chair. Kelly previously served as vice chair alongside Dr. Corey King. With Corey’s appointment to Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin—Whitewater, he has relocated outside the GSNWGL council and therefore stepped down as board chair. Kelly is chair of the Department of Cognitive and Learning Sciences at Michigan Tech and brings years of experience and service with her. Kelly has served on the board for GSNWGL since 2016 and as vice chair since 2022.
Kelly shares, “I’m thrilled to step into this position as GSNWGL is reimagining its future. Girl Scouts has always been the premiere leadership program for girls. I’m proud to be part of a council committed to growing and adapting to ensure we have the programs and facilities to support girls in a rapidly changing world.”
Kelly is a Gold Award Girl Scout and a lifetime member and commends Girl Scouts for much of her early leadership development. Her first board of directors experience was as a girl member of the board for Michigan Trails Girl Scouts. As a teen, Kelly had the opportunity to develop STEM programming and create a curriculum for a peer mentoring program. Out of all of her Girl Scout experiences, camp stands out as the most important to Kelly—spending a week or more every summer at camp throughout her childhood and working at camp for much of her teen and young adult years. Kelly knows firsthand how vital camp and outdoor programs are to the overall Girl Scout experience and understands the care and passion that must go into decisions that affect such beloved and transformative places.
