Celebrate Native American Heritage Month 2023

Since 1990, the month of November has been recognized as Native American Heritage Month. It is a month to celebrate and honor the more than 500 Native American tribes and communities across the United States. Join us at Girl Scouts in celebrating Indigenous cultures, learning about their history, and taking action.

There are many ways in which you and your Girl Scout can celebrate and honor this month-

  • Girl Scouts can earn their Native American Month “I’m a Girl Scout!” Fun Patch
  • Use this map to see what Native land you reside on and talk to your Girl Scout about what that means
  • You can also go onto these sites to learn more about the tribal communities that make up our council specifically:
    • Upper Peninsula
    • Wisconsin
  • Read books and watch documentaries or movies with your Girl Scout that talk and open up discussion about indigenous cultures
  • Attend a Powwow or other traditional ceremonies that are open to the public

Even though Native American Heritage Month is only one month, diversity and diverse perspectives can and should be celebrated and talked about all year. Girl Scouts can participate in all of the Multicultural Community Celebration patch programs throughout the year to start these conversations.
