How to Celebrate: World Thinking Day

“World Thinking Day” was originally named “Thinking Day” in 1926, at the 4th World Conference in the United States, to honor Founder of the Boy Scout Movement, Lord Baden-Powell, and World Chief Guide, Olave Baden-Powell, who’s birthdays both fell on February 22nd. In 1932, at the 7th World Conference in Poland, delegates decided that in honor of birthday gifts, donations and fundraisers could take their place to show appreciation on this day. It was not until 1999 at the 30th World Conference that “Thinking Day” became “World Thinking Day”. Every year a central theme is chosen for World Thinking Day—2024’s theme is “Our World, Our Thriving Future: The Environment and Global Poverty”.

There are many ways for you and your Girl Scouts to celebrate and give back during this month—

  • Girl Scouts can earn their World Thinking Day 2024 Award | Girl Scout Shop
  • Anyone interested in more information can go to the Volunteer Collective https://vc.gsnwgl.org/making-it-happen/badges-journeys-awards-patches/badges/world-thinking-day/
  • Read Kids’ Books go to Thinking Day | kateywrites (wordpress.com) and watch this short video Virtual Programming - World Thinking Day Tradition (youtube.com) to learn about history and traditions of celebration in recent years.
  • Donate on The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) website Donate (wagggs.org)
  • Based on this year’s theme, consider donating to other organizations helping these causes:
    • Support Feeding America | Feeding America
    • Network for Good :: Make Donation
    • Donate - Through Shelter, We Empower (foxcitieshabitat.org)
    • Plant-A-Tree Program (usda.gov)
  • Consider an activity to help simulate a process of planting as it pertains to our environment and outdoor aspect:
    • Build a Planting Machine | Technovation Families (curiositymachine.org)

World Thinking Day is merely one day, so this is a major opportunity to talk to your kiddos about how important this day is to globally connect and fundraising for over 10 million Girl Scouts and their Girl Guides stretched across 152 countries.
